How we built this list

We don’t just repeat one site’s ranking. Bob Vila’s testers ran 14 mowers through 32 hours of side-by-side mowing on both maintained and neglected grass, TechGearLab has bought and compared 12 mowers in over 100 hours of testing, and Pro Tool Reviews measures power, blade tip speed and noise on every battery mower it tests. We added hands-on reviews, Consumer Reports’ published picks and long-term owner videos. A mower only makes this list if the experts agree it cuts well, and we call out the complaints that keep coming up.

1. EGO Power+ 21 in. Select Cut LM2135SP — Best battery lawn mower overall

Why reviewers love it: This is the mower the most testers agree on. Bob Vila named it Best Overall after its side-by-side test, giving it a perfect 5/5 for cut quality and runtime, and its tester called it the best of the several EGO generations they’ve used. Its Select Cut system stacks two blades, and the kit comes with three swappable lower blades (mulching, high-lift bagging and extended runtime). TechGearLab scored it 80/100 and liked its long runtime and quick recharge, and Newsweek’s reviewer found it powered through tall, dense grass while staying quiet enough to listen to earbuds. EGO’s 56V batteries also run the EGO leaf blowers that top our blower guide.

  • Deck: 21 in., self-propelled (rear-wheel drive with Touch Drive speed dial)
  • Battery: 56V 7.5Ah, one included
  • Runtime / recharge: about 60 minutes / 60 minutes (Bob Vila)
  • Typical price: mid-range for a self-propelled battery kit; check the retailer for current pricing

What to watch for: The self-propel system takes practice: TechGearLab, Newsweek and Top Ten Reviews all mention a learning curve, and TechGearLab found it can come into turns hot and pivots poorly at full speed. Bob Vila found the bag undersized for big yards, and Top Ten Reviews called it heavy and got less coverage per charge than EGO claims.

2. Milwaukee M18 Fuel 21 in. 2823-22HD — Most powerful, best for large lawns

Why reviewers love it: Pro Tool Reviews gave it 9.7/10 and called it the most capable professional-grade battery mower available when they tested it. Milwaukee rates it at 10 ft-lbs of torque, more than a 200cc gas engine, and its steel deck spins the blade up to 3,300 RPM in high-lift mode. Bob Vila’s testers saw stronger uplift than any other battery mower they tried, with clean single-pass cuts and no clumps. ToolGuyd’s reviewer said it outperformed comparable gas mowers and declared his gas mower obsolete. It runs on two M18 batteries at once, so it’s a natural pick if you already own Milwaukee tools (see our DeWalt vs Milwaukee guide).

  • Deck: 21 in. steel, rear-wheel drive up to 4 mph
  • Battery: two M18 12.0Ah batteries plus a charger in the kit
  • Runtime: up to about 60 minutes (Pro Tool Reviews, Bob Vila)
  • Weight: 85 lb with batteries (Pro Tool Reviews)
  • Typical price: about $1,099 for the kit (Pro Tool Reviews)

What to watch for: It’s expensive, it won’t run on one battery, and Bob Vila found it less nimble in tight spaces. Pro Tool Reviews’ only real gripe was the angle of the thumb drive bar, which can tire your thumb. ToolGuyd notes it makes the most sense for people already on the M18 platform.

3. Ryobi 40V HP AWD RY40HPLM03K2 — Best for hills

Why reviewers love it: All-wheel drive is rare on a walk-behind mower, and it works. Bob Vila’s tester mowed slopes of 45 degrees and steeper for two hours without a single slip and rated it 4.7/5; the roundup named it Best Self-Propelled. Pro Tool Reviews scored it 9.6/10, put its power in the 196cc gas class (10.4 ft-lbs of torque, just above the Milwaukee) and praised its mulching, top-tier bagging and true side discharge. It runs in rear-wheel drive to save battery and switches to AWD at the flip of a switch, with a handlebar screen showing battery, speed and mode.

  • Deck: 21 in. composite with CrossCut stacked blades and a built-in mulch plug
  • Battery: two 40V 6.0Ah batteries plus a charger
  • Runtime / recharge: up to 75 minutes / about 2 hours (Bob Vila)
  • Weight: 86.7 lb with batteries (Pro Tool Reviews)
  • Typical price: about $849 for the kit (Bob Vila, Pro Tool Reviews)

What to watch for: It draws from both batteries at the same time, so you can’t swap one out mid-mow (Bob Vila). Pro Tool Reviews found that clippings can make the mulch-plug knob sticky. Ryobi is sold at Home Depot only. Don’t confuse it with Ryobi’s cheaper rear-wheel-drive RY40HPLM01 and RY40HPLM02 models.

4. EGO Power+ 22 in. Aluminum Select Cut LM2206SP — Best premium mower for mulching

Why reviewers love it: Pro Tool Reviews named it the best residential battery mower of 2026, measuring 11.1 ft-lbs of torque and an 18,400 FPM blade tip speed, the highest figures listed for any mower in this guide, and said it drives more like a commercial machine than a homeowner model. Bob Vila picked it as Best for Mulching: it chopped the tallest grass in their test without bogging down or leaving clumps. The cast-aluminum deck is lighter than steel and won’t rust.

  • Deck: 22 in. aluminum with stacked blades, 3 mowing modes
  • Battery: one 56V 10.0Ah battery plus a charger
  • Runtime: up to 70 minutes (Pro Tool Reviews, Bob Vila)
  • Typical price: about $1,299 for the kit (Pro Tool Reviews)

What to watch for: It’s the priciest mower here and heavy (about 85 lb per Bob Vila). There’s no side discharge, and Pro Tool Reviews found its rear discharge less effective than a side chute. Bob Vila noticed a noisy wheel motor and warns that aluminum is more brittle than steel if you mow over rocks.

5. Echo 56V 21 in. DLM-2100R2-2 — Best push mower

Why reviewers love it: Self-propel isn’t a must on a small, flat lawn, and Bob Vila’s Best Push pick shows how good a plain push mower can be. Testers found it well balanced, with high rear wheels that make it easy to steer, and said it cut as cleanly as their best overall pick. It holds two batteries but uses one at a time, switching automatically when the first runs flat, so you can recharge one while you keep mowing.

  • Deck: 21 in., push (not self-propelled)
  • Battery: two 56V 5.0Ah batteries plus a rapid charger
  • Runtime / recharge: up to 140 minutes / 150 minutes with both batteries (Bob Vila)
  • Weight: about 70 lb (Bob Vila)

What to watch for: You do the pushing, which gets tiring on hills or big yards, and Bob Vila found dense grass drains the batteries faster. It’s not the self-propelled DLM-2100SP, so check the model number. Only one expert verdict on this exact kit so far.

Battery lawn mower buying guide

Pick the battery platform first

A mower kit’s batteries are a big part of its price, and they’ll also run that brand’s trimmers, blowers and more. EGO 56V has the deepest battery lawn and garden lineup (including the snow blowers and chainsaws in our other guides), Milwaukee M18 makes sense if your garage is already red, Ryobi 40V is the Home Depot value platform, and Echo 56V suits people who want a familiar yard-equipment brand.

Match runtime to your yard

Most kits here run 50–75 minutes per charge, which covers roughly a third to two-thirds of an acre depending on the grass. Tall, thick or wet grass drains batteries much faster. If your lawn is near the limit, a second battery (or a dual-battery mower like the Echo) saves you a mid-mow wait.

Push, self-propelled or all-wheel drive

A push mower is lighter on the wallet and fine for small, flat lawns. Self-propelled models do the pushing for you; some use a speed dial (EGO, Milwaukee), while Toro’s Personal Pace simply follows your walking speed. On steep or bumpy yards, Ryobi’s all-wheel drive keeps traction where rear-wheel drive can slip.

Mulching, bagging and stacked blades

Stacked or dual blades (EGO Select Cut, Ryobi CrossCut) chop clippings finer, which helps when mulching or catching up on overgrown grass. If you like to bag leaves in the fall, look for a strong high-lift mode like Milwaukee’s. If you often cut tall grass, make sure the mower has a side discharge chute; the EGO 22 in. doesn’t.

Frequently asked questions

Are battery lawn mowers as good as gas?

The best ones are. Pro Tool Reviews puts the Milwaukee and Ryobi AWD in the 196–200cc gas class, and Bob Vila’s tester said the Milwaukee was one of the first battery mowers that made them consider giving up gas. The trade-off is runtime: you’re limited by the batteries, so big lawns may need spares.

What is the best battery lawn mower for most people?

The EGO Power+ Select Cut LM2135SP has the broadest expert backing (Consensus Score 81 from four reviews). If you already own Milwaukee M18 or Ryobi 40V batteries, the Milwaukee 2823 or Ryobi AWD may be the smarter buy.

Is it worth buying a lawn mower in the fall?

It can be. You’ll know exactly how long your last cuts of the season took, which tells you how much runtime you need, and you’ll be ready for the first cut in spring. Prices change often, so check the retailer before you buy. Before winter, check your manual for how to store the mower and batteries.

Do I need a self-propelled mower?

Not for a small, flat yard, where a well-balanced push mower like the Echo works well. Battery mowers with big batteries weigh 70–90 lb, though, so on slopes or lawns over about a quarter acre, self-propel makes mowing much easier.

The bottom line

Get the EGO Select Cut LM2135SP if you want the mower most experts agree on. Step up to the Milwaukee M18 Fuel 2823 for big lawns and maximum power, choose the Ryobi 40V HP AWD for hills, or the EGO 22 in. Aluminum if you want premium mulching. On a small flat lawn, the Echo push mower is all you need.
